Up the Crick

We found this beautiful walkway along the Soquel Creek in Capitola, CA. Lot's of charming homes and gardens. Some are vacation rentals!!! I painted with my mother (in the foreground). Although not a part of the competition, she walked, hauled her gear, painted, and helped me out all week.
So fun to have that time with her.

Usually during a plein air painting competition, artists are asked to paint a scene within a certain time frame. The artist sets up, and begins painting when the airhorn is sounded, and stops when the airhorn blasts at the end of the set time. Sort of like the TV show "Chopped". We had two hours to paint a scene of our choosing. This was mine.

The scene ...
The painter ...

Another painters subject ... me, my mother, and Erika.

Thanks to my fellow painters for an honorable mention!

Seeing Red

This painting I painted on site during the 2019 Capitola Plein Air Painting Competition. I painted along side fellow painter Marti Walker, and the guy in the background, who sat there all day everyday, keeping an eye on things.

... my mother painted along side me the whole week, and was watched over as well.

I saw this guy drive up in a great vintage VW bus, and thought I'd paint it in yellow as an homage to my late brother who owned one. When the guy got out I said "Hey, I like your car" and he responded "It's a piece of shit!" Oh, ok. His neighbors, who crowded around to see the painting said that's because he has to drive it.
